Nityanand Swami was an Indian politician and the first Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He played a key role in the formation of the state and served from 9 November 2000 to 29 October 2001. Throughout his life, he was active in politics, law, and social service.
Early Life and Education
Nityanand Swami was born as Nityanand Sharma on 27 December 1927 in Narnaul, Punjab (now in Haryana). His family later moved to Dehradun, where his father worked at the Forest Research Institute. Swami was an intelligent and active student. He studied at Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) College in Dehradun and was known for his debating skills. He was also involved in social and political activities from a young age.
Role in the Freedom Struggle
Swami was influenced by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and took part in local movements against British rule. His early involvement in social work helped him gain experience in leadership and public service.
Political Career
Entry into Politics
Swami started his political journey with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), which later became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). For a short time, he was also a member of the Indian National Congress. However, he returned to the BJP and remained loyal to the party.
Elected Positions
- 1969: He was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Dehradun.
- 1984: He became a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, representing the Garhwal and Kumaon region.
- 1991: He became the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council of Uttar Pradesh.
- 1992: He was elected as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
Swami was a strong supporter of labor rights and social justice. He often participated in hunger strikes to support workers and was even sent to jail 18 times for his protests.
Role in the Creation of Uttarakhand
Swami worked behind the scenes in the struggle for the creation of Uttarakhand. He actively promoted the cause of a separate state, ensuring that policies were made to uplift the region. For his contributions, he received several awards, including the “Pride of the Doon” Award and the Uttar Pradesh Ratna in 2000.
Chief Minister of Uttarakhand
On 9 November 2000, Uttarakhand was officially formed as a new state, and Nityanand Swami was chosen as its first Chief Minister. His leadership helped in laying the foundation for the new state’s governance and administration. However, his term lasted only until 29 October 2001, when he stepped down in favor of Bhagat Singh Koshyari, following the BJP’s decision.
Personal Life
Swami was married to Chandrakanta Sharma, and they had four daughters. He lived a simple life dedicated to public service.
Death and Legacy
Nityanand Swami passed away on 12 December 2012 at the age of 84 in Dehradun. He is remembered for his contribution to Uttarakhand’s formation and his commitment to public welfare.
